As you may know last year ACC celebrated 25 years of worshipping in St Matthews, coinciding with St Matthews own centenary. From humble but courageous beginnings as a weekly study for gay members of the St Matthews, through interesting and testing times, now ACC seems to have an established if low key presence in both queer and church communities. You can find pictures of the events which marked the anniversary at Pictures
Part of the AGM (26 March) was spent discussing a proposal for a stained glass window. There was both joy and disquiet expressed about the project. Terry Stringer had offered a vision for the design. Therefore Terry has withdrawn and the Board has put the project on hold for six months. No money from ACC reserves has been spent.
The board decided to organize a weekend camp / retreat. More details will be notified as fixed arrangements are made, we are looking at a weekend in September 2006.
Please find a copy of the brochure included. These are one way of letting people know about our church, and giving quite a lot of detail detail about what our aims are. Are there places we should be distributing these that you can suggest?
On Easter Monday 12 ACCers took to the hills for a hike. A hallowed tradition of group hiking which started on Labour Day 1990 is being revived.
Meeting at Peter Lineham's home, detained by numerous cups of coffee, we departed with a blessing by the Rev. Bob Scott, who refused to accompany us lest we be forced into making unpleasant ethical decisions were he to collapse during the hike.
As good environmentally friendly hikers we car-pooled and drove to the Cascade-Kauri entrance to the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park. We donned boots and some had a quick snack of Easter eggs to boost the energy levels.
The first part of the hike was flat and pleasant along the Auckland City Walk. Our Beloved Leader took a branch track which climbed almost vertically. Hard breathing and putting one foot in front of the other got us to the summit.
Soon we were at the top and the Waitakere Reservoir. We found a pleasant spot for lunch and spread our picnic blankets and coats. We were amazed at the lunch provisions that some folks had managed to stuff into their packs.
No risk of overeating.
Rain.
Panic. Return to the cars.
Muddy patches and a stream was crossed, the intrepid hikers managed it with ease and soon the Cascade-Kauri car park was in sight.
The final stop was the Swanson Railway Station Cafe for well earned coffee and cake, and a chance to relive the highs and lows of a day in the hills. Hector’s naked torso attracts the attention of Geoff and Alastair. Alan keeps watch.
