. A couple of extracts: There are a great many people throughout New Zealand, especially around about the 70s as I am, who have reason to be very grateful to Ngaio Marsh. She took our love of theatre; our love of drama; our love of dressing up; our love of showing off; and made something grand of it, while still being fun. They were memorable times which have stayed with us. One of my friends still calls them “my golden days”.
Who could forget Ngaio? In draughty rehearsal halls; her beret askew on her head; her cigarette dangling from the corner of her mouth with the ash drooping in a downward curl as we waited for the moment it would drop; her huge book of the script with its many side drawing and production notes; her deep demanding voice which rose to a shriek if the theatrics demanded it.
To Jo: thank you for writing this biography. You have done it so well. And borrowing words Elric Hooper sent to you last week I want to say: “with this biography you have helped us fall in love with Ngaio all over again”.
