What does each ministry involve?

Ministries in General:

  • Ministers arrive on time for their rostered worship and to make arrangements with the preparer if unable to minister that day

Presider

  • An ordained minister of a Christian denomination who is in good standing with that denomination.
  • Presides over the worship

Homilist;

  • Prepares and delivers a homily, normally on the scripture of the day. This is not usually to be more than ten minutes in length.
  • Assists the Presider with administering communion (including a blessing).

Musician;

  • Provides musical accompaniment to the congregation.
  • Consults with the Preparer about the music and practises in advance.

First Reader;

  • Reads the first two readings
  • Practises in advance.
  • Announces the gradual hymn when there is one.

Gospel Reader;

  • Reads the Gospel reading
  • Practises in advance.

Prayers of Intercession;

  • Leads the community in prayer
  • Prepares prayers in advance when necessary.
  • Makes themselves aware of any needs or issues

Acolyte;

  • Welcomes people as they arrive, ensuring that they have whatever they need to participate in the service.
  • Invites people to stay for Supper
  • Collects the offering and presents it to the Presider.
  • Assists with administering communion

Preparation of Supper;

  • Arrives early to set up supper (cups, teaspoons, plates, teas, coffee, milk, sugar, food).
  • Brings a litre of milk (financial reimbursement will be arranged).
  • Cleans up and does the dishes after the supper and ensures that everything is safely put away.

Preparing Worship

  1. Service Sheet:

    1. Preparing the Service Sheet for the sunday;
    2. Confirming their availability with the ministry team rostered for that Sunday.

  2. Music:

    1. Consulting with the preacher and advising the musician of the musical requirements, preferably a week in advance.

  3. Setting up the church:

    1. Arriving early (usually about three-quarters of an hour earlier);
    2. Consulting with the Board, preacher and presider about anything that needs special preparation and ensuring that everyone concerned knows what, where and when to do whatever it is that they are doing.

  4. Letting people know.

    a. Emailing out sunday notices usually on the preceding friday..
