Roles of Ministers / Preparing Worship
Special Services that depart from normal liturgies are subject to approval from the Board or its chair.
What does each Ministry involve?
Ministries in General:
- Ministers are expected to arrive on time for their rostered Worship and to make alternative arrangements if they are unable to minister that day. Please let the Preparer for that Worship know what alternative arrangements have been made.
- Ministers whose role requires them to address the Congregation are requested to familiarize themselves with and to use the microphones provided as we do have hearing impaired people who attend our worship regularly
- The Board reserves the right to invite those with the appropriate charisms to exercize the particular ministries.
Presider
- Needs to be an ordained Minister of a Christian denomination with a formal Eucharistic tradition who is in good standing with that denomination.
- Presides over the Worship in conjunction with any other person whom the Board may authorize to co-preside for a particular occasion.
Homilist;
- Prepares and delivers a homily, normally on the Scripture of the Day. This is not usually to be more than ten minutes in length.
- Assists the Presider with the Administration of Communion (including a blessing).
Musician;
- Provides musical accompaniment to the Congregation, enabling them to Worship in tune.
- Consults with the Preparer about the musical requirements for the Worship and practises the music in advance.
First Reader;
- Proclaims the first two Readings for the Day.
- Practises and Prepares in advance.
- Announces the Gradual Hymn when there is one.
Gospel Reader;
- Proclaims the Gospel Reading for the Day.
- Practises and Prepares in advance.
Prayers of Intercession;
- Leads the Community in prayer in response to the Readings and Homily.
- Prepares prayers in advance when necessary.
- Makes themselves aware of any needs or issues pertinent to the Community for which prayers are required.
Acolyte;
- Welcomes people as they arrive, ensuring that they have whatever they need to participate in the Worship.
- Farewells people as they leave, inviting them to join us for Supper should they so wish to do so.
- Collects the Offering and presents it to the Presider.
- Assists with the Administration of Communion.
Preparation of Supper;
- Arrives early to set up the urn and supper table (cups, teaspoons, plates, tea, herbal tea, coffee, milk, sugar, finger food).
- Provides a litre of milk and ensures that there are beverages, biscuits or some other finger food available (financial reimbursement will be arranged).
- Cleans up and does the dishes after the supper and ensures that everything is safely put away.

Preparing Worship
- Service Sheet:
- Preparing the Service Sheet for the Sunday;
- Confirming their availability with the presider, musician and preacher rostered for that Sunday
- Consulting with John Carbutt about who is doing the other rostered ministries;
- Checking with the Board and Worship Committee about any special arrangements for the Sunday.
- Music
:
- Consulting with the preacher and advising the musician of the musical requirements, preferably a week in advance.
- Setting up the church:
- Arriving early (usually about three-quarters of an hour earlier);
- Consulting with the Board, Worship Committee, preacher and presider about anything that needs special preparation and ensuring that everyone concerned knows what, where and when to do whatever it is that they are doing.
- Letting people know.
